The History of Father's Day

In West Virginia, Father's Day was first observed during a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South. The congregation's pastor, J.J. Berringer, had been urged to celebrate the holiday by Grace Golden Clayton. Clayton had been inspired by a tragic mine explosion in Monongah, West Virginia, which had claimed the lives of 361 people, many of them fathers and recent immigrants from Italy.

As a result of the emergence of the holiday, the history of Father's Day is complex. It was a time when modern-day men were not perceived as industrial workers, and fatherhood was seen as a more feminine role. However, the role of father has become more inclusive of both moms and dads. Today, the holiday celebrates the larger roles that men play with their children. It also recognizes the many interests, hobbies, and special qualities that dads possess.

The first Father's Day celebration was held on June 5, 1908. This was after a tragic mining accident in West Virginia left hundreds of men dead. The pastor, Grace Golden, urged her congregation to hold a special service on that day for men to honor their loved ones. The two women decided to promote the new holiday nationally once Sonora finished her education. Sonora Smart Dodd eventually became president of the Presbyterian Church.

The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington in 1910. The idea originated in a sermon addressing the role of fathers, which was delivered by a woman who had lost her mother during childbirth. She was moved by the message and conceived the idea for Father's Day. She received support from President Franklin Roosevelt and later, he proclaimed June 19th as National Father's Day.

Why We celebrate Fathers day

Why Do We Celebrate Father's Day? It all started when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, a resident of Spokane, Washington, heard a Mother's Day sermon and realized that a day dedicated to fathers was necessary. Smart's father, William Jackson Smart, had two wives pass away, one during childbirth and the other in childbirth, leaving him to raise his five brothers and sisters. Smart wanted Father's Day to be an annual event to recognize the unique role of fathers.

The first recorded celebration of Father's Day took place in West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was an event organized to commemorate the 362 men who had died in a coal mine explosion in that area. The event was not yet a national holiday, but a woman from Spokane, Washington, took up the initiative, rallying local churches and business owners, and eventually the government, to help raise awareness of the tragedy.

In the early twentieth century, American fathers were overlooked and valued by mothers. But fathers are equally important. They are equally responsible for the health, education, and emotional wellbeing of their children. They can teach their children to be independent and take responsibility for their lives, as their mothers did. However, fathers rarely show their weakness, so it's important to celebrate their contribution to their children's lives. And while many men don't recognize the role of fathers, they deserve equal respect and appreciation.
